John Fitzgerald Kennady gets elected in 1960 and planned to put in place something similar to the New Deal, the "NEW FRONTIER".

Lyndon Baines Johnson, became Kennady's successor.
He was a man that believed in using power, and he gained more support for New Frontier proposals.

Kennedy hoped to expand enforcement of existing laws and supporting litigation to overturn existing segregation statutes.
The STUDNET NONVIOLENT COORDINATING COMMITTE (SNCC), worked to keep the spirit of resistance alive.
Another group of interracial students worked with the CONGRESS OF RACIAL EQUALITY (CORE) and began "freedom rides" which was done by traveling on bus throughout the south and force the desegregation of bus stations.
the SOUTHERN CHRISTIAN LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE (SCLC) created citizen-education and other programs which were a majority organized by Ella Baker one of the most successful leaders of the movement, who mobilized African Americans to challenge segregation.
People were getting attacked at nonviolent protests in Alabama which caused officals to spray them down.NAACP officer Medgar Evers was murdered.
On August 1963 in Washington D.C. there was a march to protest segregation led by Martin Luther King Jr.
Thousands of civil rights workers, blkack and white, northern and souther, spread out through the South and worked on behalf of black voter registration and participation. This was known as "FREEDOM SUMMER"

In March 1965 there was a protest held by King, but during the march 2 were murdered. This causedJohnson to propose and win passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1965, (AKA the Voting Rights Act) which provided federal protection to blacks attempting to exercise their right to vote.

Affirmative Action would extend to all institutions doing business with or receiving funds from the federal government (including schools and universities)- and to many others as well.
Watts Riot happened when an African American was arrested and suddenly beat by a police officer. There were several riots in which many died.
Bay of PIgs: wanted to take down Castro Government, so they sent armed exhiles and they expected American Air support and an uprising by the Cuban people on their behalf. they got neither and the mission failed.
The Soviet Union had built missiles in Cuba, and the U.S. saw this as a threat. The Soviet Union agreed to remove the missiles after Kennedy was getting ready to attack. This was known as the Cuban Missile Crisis.
Johnson wanted to quell Bosch turning the Dominican Republic into communist so he sent 30,000 troops to take him down.
Ho Chi Minh a communist was leader of political party the Vietminh, (1941) and wanted possession of Vietnam, but France wanted Possession of it too.
French and Vietminh are fighting, but the Vietminh forces win against the French and they lose the FIRST INDOCHINA WAR.

The Geneva Conference ended conflict when it said that North Vietnam would be under the control of Vietminh and a pro-western regime in control of the South. partitioned along the 17th parallel. There would be elections to join them together again.

Diem tried to change the Religion in South Vietnam to Catholicism, and many didn't like like that which made him loose popularity. The U.S. didn't like that either and killed him.
The Gulf of Tonkin was supposedly attacked by North Vietnam which prompted Johnson to pass the GOLF OF TONKIN RESOLUTION which showed that they were going to escalate the situation.

America wanted to battle the North out, but they were willing to put in a lot of effort.
Another strategy was the "Pacification" which was to try to win the heart of the opposition after taking out North Vietnam. Didn't work because American forces didn't really know how to do that.
The U.S. would then have to rely on defeating Viet Cong and then forcing people to migrate and become refugees.

On the 1st day of the Vietnam new year (Tet) communist forces attacked american strong holds in southern vietnam. Known as the TET OFFENSIVE.
The U.S. beat the communists in the Tet offensive, but it showed the horrors of the situation in vietnam.
Martin Luther King Jr. was killed on April 4 1968 by James Earl Ray who was hired by someone to kill King.
