blocks dopamine receptors (Inhibits signals to vomiting center of brain)

nausea/vomiting

give 2 hours before or after antacids and antidiarrheals

diphenoxylate with atropine (Lomotil)
mechanism of action
slows peristalsis
allows water to be reabsorbed
administration alert
dont give to infants
atropine is added to keep patients from taking too much
adverse effects
low potential for abuse
some drowsiness/dizziness
contraindications
obstructive jaundice
severe dehydration
severe liver disease
narrow angle glaucoma
diarrhea/PMC
drug-drug interactions
CNS depressants
Tx overdose
naloxone
psyllium mucilloid (Metamucil)
mechanism of action
swells/increases size of fecal mass to promote passage of mass
administration alert
may take up to 3 days to work
may cause small reduction in cholesterol level
mix with 8 oz water, fruit juice, or milk
administer immediately, chase with 8 oz water
watch for aspiration
adverse effects
esophageal obstruction
contraindications
patients with undiagnosed abdominal pain, intestinal obstruction, or fecal impaction
