Narrative

To understand the old testament narratives we must use the 5 steps of the interpretive journey.
"Four elements of narrative that we did not discuss in part 1 are: (1) plot, (2) setting, (3) characters, and (4) the viewpoint of the narrator. In our discussion of the Gospels (Ch. 15) we encourage you to ask Who? What? When? Where? Why? and How? These questions will get you started in your study of narrative, but we need to expand on these for each of the four elements mentioned above" (Duvall and Hays,339).

New Testament Interpretation
Acts
Acts is like a story or narrative.
Acts is similar to the gospels but instead of following one person (Jesus) it is following several people (key church leaders.)
Just like in the gospels there are the two questions: what is the author of the Acts trying to tell us through the way he connect the smaller stories, and what is the main point the author is trying to get across?
Should we take the acts as normative, so that that the church of all times should imitate the experiences and practices of the early church? Or should we read Acts as merely descriptive of what was valuable and inspiring in the early church, but not necessarily binding on is today? Without a doubt this is the most significant issue we face as we learn to interpret Acts" (Duvall and Hays, 299).

Letters
When interpreting New Testament letters one will follow the five steps of the interpretive journey.
"Begin by reading the whole letter in one sitting. This may take a while for longer letters, but it's the only way to see the big picture" (Duvall and Hays,259).

Gospels
To understand the Gospels we must ask two questions what is the author of the gospels trying to tell us through the way they connect the smaller stories, and what is the main point the author is trying to get across?
"The four Gospels are similar in many ways to ancient biography, but they are more than ancient biography. By focusing on Jesus' life and teachings we may describe the Gospels accurately as Christological biography" (Duvall and Hays,273).

"The book seems strange because it combines three different literary genres: letter, prophecy, and apocalyptic" (Duvall and Hays,312).
