Artificial Intelligence
What is AI?
-
"intelligence is tied to a system's ability to adapt and improvise in a new environment, to generalise its knowledge and apply it to unfamiliar scenarios."
-
Benefits and healthcare
The recent breakthrough by Google's AlphaFold 2 machine-learning system is expected to reduce the time taken during a key step when developing new drugs from months to hours.
-
Deepfakes
-
Deepfaking can lead to hugely disruptive social change, because people won't know who to trust as this hyper-realistic faking technology becomes more and more sophisticated in the future.
It may seem pretty rubbish now, but in a decade time, this technology will be a lot more advanced. In a decades time is when scientists will be having the dreaded conversation: "Will AI take over the world?"
Two types of AI
Narrow AI: This kind of artificial intelligence operates within a limited context and is a simulation of human intelligence. Narrow AI is often focused on performing a single task extremely well and while these machines may seem intelligent, they are operating under far more constraints and limitations than even the most basic human intelligence.
Artificial General Intelligence (AGI): AGI is the kind of intelligence we see in the film industry, like droids from star wars or Data from Star Trek. AGI is a machine with a general intelligence and, much like a human being, it can apply that intelligence to solve any problem.

Narrow AI
Narrow AI is all around us and is easily the most successful realization of artificial intelligence to date. With its focus on performing specific tasks, Narrow AI has experienced numerous breakthroughs and have contributed to the economic vitality of the nation.
A few examples include: Google Search, image recognition software, Siri, Alexa and other personal assistants, self driving cars, IBM's Watson.
