- - - - Activity: Role Play.
        The teacher will focus closely on page 4 of the 'Magic Beach' book. In particular, the students will recreate this page where the king and queen are trapped, using their imagination and a range of customs in their performance. Students will be encouraged to use vocabulary from the book, such as "dragon" and "flames" when doing their
        performance.
    - - Activity: Beach Events.
        The book will be read out in the morning session by the teacher and then the teacher will explain the exciting news. In particular, the year 1 class of students will go on an excursion to Leighton Beach, which is in North of Fremantle so that the students can have a sensorial experience. It will give students the opportunity to reflect on what the beach looks like and the things people do on the beach. The students will have to record information on the following with a pencil and clipboard: At the beach I can see? At the beach I hear? At the beach I can touch? At the beach I can smell? At the beach I can do? Encourage the students to take photos and videos on the iPads of the beach as this will capture their experiece.
    - - Activity: Concept Map.
        The children’s book known as ‘Magic Beach’ will be read out by the teacher. The teacher will explore the ‘setting’ of the book by viewing the illustrations, pointing to some of the features that make up the beach setting on each page such as waves and shells. For the activity, students will construct a concept map about setting by answering the following questions: “Where is this story taking place? What is happening around the characters? What is the weather like?”.
  - - - Activity: Campfire Cooking.
        The teacher will focus on page 12, using the illustration of the campfire, students will bring this to life by cooking campfire food such as damper. The cooking process will require students to use interaction skills like turn-taking and speaking clearly. The students will be delegated such as the recipe reader, ingredients collector, stirrer, moulder and oven watcher. The teacher will ensure that the recipe is concise and easy to follow for the students, however the teacher will be floating around the room for any assistance.
    - - Activity: Shark Story.
        The 'Magic Beach' will be read by the teacher to the class and page 12 will be closely focused on. For the activity, students are to create a story that is based on the image of the six children reeling in a shark. The students will be required to include a line of dialogue in the story that explains their facial expressions and the thoughts that would be going through their minds in the image. The students will complete their short story inside their writing journals and if there are any early finishers they can draw pictures to support their ideas.
    - - Activity: Favourite Beach Spots.
        The 'Magic Beach' text will be read out loud by the teacher on the mat. The students will then be told to move in an orderly fashion to a desk. The purpose of the activity is to draw and describe some of the favorite spots that the children visited at the Magic Beach. Students will be encouraged to use the beach voculbuary from within the book, in their descriptions. Some of the beach vocubulary is the following: warm pools, waves, sand, castles, sparkling sea, crabs, starfish, tiny fish, shells, boat
  - - - Activity: Noun Bingo
        The book will be read by the teacher and along the way, the teacher will put a large emphasis on nouns that they come across. For the activity, the teacher will call out nouns that were in the book (e.g., castles, pools, pearls and beach) and each time students hear that noun and see it on their chart, they will cover it with a counter. When the counters are all lined up in a row (horizontal or vertical) then that student will call out “Bingo” and the first one to do this will be announced the winner of that round.
      - Activity: Verb Charades.
        The teacher will confidently read the 'Magic Beach' book out loud and will put a large emphasis on verbs that they come across. The goal of the activity is for students to act out specific verbs that were in the book (e.g., swim and walk) and the rest of the class will try to guess these. Students will take turns on who goes next and the teacher will clarify that there is no speaking allowed, only actions! Those students who accidentally speak will be told to do five-star jumps on the spot.
    - - Activity: Characters emotions
        The teacher will read the book to the students on the mat. The teacher will then explain that the ‘Magic Beach’ closely looks at childhood emotions and emotional experiences, such as the children being excited to go to the beach, as well as being frightened when tossed about on the tall mast of the tangerine boat. Students will be asked to share their own personal experiences on:
        What is something that makes you excited?
        Have you ever been frightened? How can you help yourself if you are feeling frightened? How can you help others?
        Students are to then pick their favorite character that they would like to focus on. The students will record the characters' emotions on a chart. The chart will have the following two headings: facial expression & body language
    - - Activity: Roll and Read.
        The teacher will read the book out loud to the class on the mat, highlighting the use of sight words. Students will then undertake an activity to practice their reading of sight words, where they are divided into groups of four and given a piece of paper card that will signify the words that each number on the dice will represent. The goal of the game is for students to roll a 6-sided dice, then choose a sight word from the line that matches the roll and read out the word (e.g., number 2 on dice may represent the words; with, then, been). The students will have to place a counter on the word that they read out. This activity will continue until all the words on the paper card have all been read out.
- - - - Activity: Character Drawing .
        The teacher will read the 'Magic Beach', highlighting the jump between different worlds. The teacher will then explain in-depth that the book looks at two worlds, a real-world and imaginary world which is filled with different characters. Students will choose a character from the illustrations and make either a drawing or painting of that character by using both primary and secondary colors in their work of art. The following are the characters that students can choose from: Baby, Mum, Dad, Dragon, Horse, Shark
        Related to English: Students are examining the text through a character lens, looking at their features.
    - - Activity: Boatbuilding
        The teacher will focus closely on page 10, where the illustrations show children floating on a tangerine boat. For the activity, students will design and build their own tangerine boat by using recycled materials such as milk and egg cartons. The students can decorate their boat with loose parts such as rocks, buttons, sticks, honky nuts and so on. Students will then be given the opportunity to showcase and initaite a dicussion about their final product to others in the class.
        Related to English: The students are engaging in discussions, displaying signs of active listening, showing interest, and contributing ideas
      - Activity: Texture Collage
        The 'Magic Beach' will confidently and clearly read out loud by the teacher. With reference to the activity, students will make a texture collage of all the different textured objects that are on the beach. A variety of objects will be provided such as shells, sand, coral and so on, where students can glue these into a sturdy piece of A3 paper and along the way students will be encouraged to use their field of vocabulary (language) to describe the textures that they included in their collage, for example words like rough, bumpy, soft, hard.
        Relates to English: The activity extends students word vocabulary as they communicate ‘what a particular objects feels like’.
