Weatherby-Fell Chapter 6 - The Australian Curriculum: Secondary Consideration
Curriculum
Curriculum is a multi-defined term that includes all aspects of the learning journey and its process. Marsh and Willis (2007 as cited in Weatherby-Fell, 2015, p. 88) define curriculum according to three forms: planned, enacted and experienced curriculum.
Features of Australian Curriculum
Learning ares: giving the learning area content within the curriculum and the planning of aims and organisation overview to be included in the learning continue. The formation of a scope and secquence creates common understanding for teachers in the development of teaching programs.
General capabilities: The seven general capabilities define what is needed to be a successful learner. This links to the Melbourne Declaration goals.
Cross-curricula priorities: focus on teaching key contemporary aspects and include, Aboriginal and Torress Strait Islander histories and cultures, Asia and Australia's engagement with Asia and Sustainability.
The Australian Curriculum was implement from 2014. It did not commence simultaneously across all states It has faced many critiscms for the tradition structure not being able to address the needs of the 21st student.
Responsibility of the states and territories: States and territories retain the responsibility for the delivery of the curriculum F-12. This results in a challenge to provide consistency for teachers and students that may move interstate. This continues to involves the varying commencement age of students in differing states.
The Melbourne Declaration
Goal 1 - Australian schooling promotes equity and excellence.
Goal 2 All young Australians become successful learners, confident and creative individuals and active and informed citizens.
These goals formed an extensive part of the Australian Curriculum and can be seen to be adopted within NSW syllabuses including the aim of the NSW Commerce syllabus, specifically "in order to make informed and
responsible decisions as individuals and as part of the community" (NESA, 2019)
Identify the middle year learners as a priority group at the greatest risk of disengagement.
