centrally acting causing vasodilation, dissipation of heat
analgesic, anti-pyretic
Adverse Effects
hepatic necrosis
malnourished patients: acute toxicity and renal failure

NSAIDS INCREASE RISK THROMBOTIC EVENTS, MI, STROKE, WHICH CAN BE FATAL: RISK INCREASES WITH DURATION OF USE; PATIENTS WITH CARDIAC DISEASE OR INCREASE RISK OF CARDIAC DISEASE HAVE INCREASED RISK OF THROMBOTIC EVENTS; CABG PATIENTS CONTRAINDICATED; NSAIDS INCREASE RISK FOR SERIOUS GI BLEED, ULCERATION, PERFORATION; OCCURS MORE FREQUENTLY IN OLDER ADULTS

active peptic ulcers
renal/hepatic impairment
nasal polyps
bronchospasm
angioedema
HF
HTN
Hx stroke/MI
Mechanism of Action
analgesic, anti-pyretic, anti-inflammatory, non-selective cox inhibitor, inhibits prostaglandin synthesis
Adverse Effects
nausea
heartburn
epigastric pain
GI bleed
renal impairment
Treatment of Overdose
alkaline drugs to increase urinary excretion
Drug-Drug Interactions
anti-coagulants
anti-hypertensives
prednisone
Administration Alerts
IM: deep into muscle mass to avoid atrophy
dont give to patient if active signs of an infection are present
taper the drug if used more than 10 days
Uses
limit to 4-10 days; use alternate day dosing for long term therapy
hodgkins disease
acute leukemia
terminate acute bronchospasm in patients with asthma
Contraindications
active vital, bacterial, fungal, or protozoan infection
Mechanism of Action
anti-inflammatory: toxic to lymphocutes causing the issue; may help with chemotherapy; can help increase appetite
Adverse Effects
cushings syndrome: gynecomastia, moon face, hyperglycemia, CNS irritability, Na/fluid retention, increase acid, thin skin, osteoporosis, bruising)
Drug-Drug Interactions
increase dose if used in conjunction with barbiturates, phenytoin
diabetic medications may need adjustment
