Orientation & Mobility Services
Orientation & Mobility (O&M) is services provided to blind or visually impaired students by qualitied personnel to enable students to attain movement within their environment in schools and home,
O&M in the school setting is defined under 34 CRF 300.34 of the Individuals with Disabilities Education ACT (IDEA). Visually impaired and totally blind students who meet the criteria for Special Education Rule 13 160-4-7-05 can receive special education services.
Services are available for students who have been established as having 20/200 in their best eye when corrected or as visually impaired with acuity of 20/70 or less.
Also services are provided if a student's peripheral field of vision is restricted to 20 degrees or they are diagnosed with a progressively deteriorating eye condition.
Orientation
is the process of using sensory information to establish and maintain one's position in an environment
Mobility
is the process of moving within one's environment safely and efficiently.
O&M in school is part of the Expanded Core Curriculum and is imbedded in the overall educational and social environment of a student
O&M Certified Professional Specialist conduct assessments to determine required services. O&M Specialist work with the teachers to assess areas of concept, motor, and sensory skill development.
The O&M services are listed in the Individual Education Plan (IEP)
