Drugs for Dysrhythmias
Antidysrhythmic
Used: to treat abnormal heart rhythms, and may be prescribed to increase/decrease the heart rate
Before: Baseline weight, heart rate, pulse, cardiac rhythm, Liver/kidney function
After: Heart rate, pulse, abnormalities, cardiac rhythm
Teaching: pt to check and record their heart rate and BP daily. never double doses, avoid orthostatic hypotension
TYPE: Atropine:
Blocks the actions of the vagus nerve on the heart. Vagus nerve slows down the heart rate. This increases in electrical impulse conduction and heart rate.
-
DIGOXIN
A cardiac glycoside
Works: slowing down a heart rate that is too fast, allowing more time for the left ventricle to fill
Atrial fibrillation: electribal signals chaotically bombard AV node, ventricular response nearly always irregular, can be slow, moderate or rapid
Intended: decreased heart rate, increase contractility and cardiac output
