Adam is a 5th grade student with a recent ADHD diagnosis. He has been at his school for 2 years has not made friends and often classmates become frustrated and angry with him. Adam is highly verbal and flippant, dislikes writing, loves sports, and becomes incredibly agitated when he believes he is in trouble.
Adam's teacher reports that Adam is easily distracted, takes objects apart yet rarely puts them back together, has a strong desire to connect with people but is often poorly received, and is physically impulsive and has been known to fall off his stool in class.
Suggested Services
Physical Positioning
Working with an OT to learn strategies to achieve and the qualities of proper positioning, as well as the difference between passive sitting and sitting for function. This can increase focus and stop Adam from falling off of his stool. This can be done with role playing games, skits, or games like Mother May I.
Fine Motor Skills
Adam can work with an occupational therapist to provide specific pens/pencils that support proper hand positioning as well as creating letters with hands in other ways (paint, shaving cream etc.) Dot to dot tracing games can also be used to increase hand eye coordination which is an associated skill.
Self Help Skills
The OT can provide practice of planning motor and cognitive activities and provide healthy non-distracting ways to fulfil the need for tactile/sensory input. Examples include velcro under the desk to rub instead of running scissors along his hand.
