Teachers should prioritize the safety and wellbeing of students.
Students mental health and well-being should come before content.
JS When a student is experiencing trauma, the ability to focus and learn becomes difficult.
A hungry, sad, or scared child cannot learn.
GR Why: A safe learning environment is not only better for learning, but is important in any work environment!
Classroom Examples (GR)
The school makes sure students are fed each day. I try to help when I am available prepare or distribute food for the weekends so students are coming to school fed!
Student mental health needs to be be in the forefront. When I have a student who is struggling with their home life or mental health this plays out as misbehavior. Recognizing this helps me get students the resources they need rather than getting frustrated with behaviors.
Classroom rules revolve around a safe learning environment.
JS By creating a safe and nurturing classroom environment, teachers create a space for students to feel valued and cared
for.
JS Teachers need to begin each school year fresh, especially when there are a fresh batch of students - this is not just for classroom teachers - all teachers, specials, etc, need to restart the school year with firm and clear expectations for safety, management and procedures.
JS When the classroom procedures are clear and understood, then safety and wellbeing will follow naturally.
JS A classroom without solid procedures and expectations is a breeding ground for misbehaviors and management problems causing issues with safety and wellbeing.
Every student should be provided with the opportunity to learn.
Allows for an equitable learning environment. :
Allow students to reach full potential.
Requires differentiated instruction.
JS Using partner or small group activities can harbor differentiation right in the classroom - leveled groups.
Society requires leaders from diverse perspectives and backgrounds.
GR: Why: Fair equitable learning environment
Examples
Differentiated instruction: Students are moving at their own pace. Co-teaching model allows us to group students, and change groups as students progress so they do not get stuck on a track.
My students come from such diverse backgrounds. I try to build on their strengths to help them be most successful.
Fair access to technology, particularly during distance learning.
Commitment to continued growth in practice.
Teachers should continually develop their craft and discipline.
JS In order to move from an efficient teacher to an exemplary one, there needs to be opportunities for growth and leadership within the school building.
JS Teachers should strive to find opportunities of leadership where they can participate or be in an active leadership role in their schools.
Some content is changing and new practices need to be developed to stay relevant.
Changing technology.
GR Why:Content and teaching practices are ever changing. In order to stay relevant we should acknowledge there are things we don't know and keep learning.
Examples
Paying attention to current music trends and asking students what they like.
Observing others' teaching.
Risk taking and reflection.
Professional Development
Collaboration with colleagues
JS Finding professional development opportunities that cater to their discipline. Attending a workshop on science curriculum doesn't make sense if you don't teach science.
JS Actively finding ways to improve teaching using reflection, restructure, and reteaching.
JS Participating in groups via social media with other teachers in your field/discipline to gather and share ideas.
Work together with other staff in a collaborative and respectful manner
Create a positive work environment.
Modeling appropriate behavior for students.
Build cross-curricular connections.
Why: So that we can learn and grow from one another,
GR: I co-teach with another teacher. We have common planning time and will often divide in order to differentiate.
Build friendly relationship with co-workers. Chat in the hall before and after work, help with projects around school, attend staff functions when invited.
Teachers should have an organized scope and sequence to facilitate their teaching.
This will keep the teacher prioritized in what they should be teaching at any given time.
Why: Assure students are learning age appropriate content and meeting standards.
Assessments are laid out for the year based on grade level standards.
Students are presented with learning targets and I can statements
Co-planning time district and school wide to develop and adjust curriculum.
Professionalism while in public eye.
Teachers should hold a professional stance on all social media accounts
Why: Modeling for your students how to be a good citizen
I am careful what I post online, and do not share negative opinions about my school or district where they can be seen by others including my students.
When I am in the community I try to remember I am in the public eye. I try to treat others with respect.
During working hours I respect my working time. When I have down time on the clock I try to use it appropriately.
