Narrative Story-telling Intervention - Who am I? Where am I going? Who do…
Narrative Story-telling Intervention - Who am I? Where am I going? Who do I want to become?
Weekly group meeting facilitated by an OT, morning slots available for 1:1 meeting with OT if necessary
Can be online or in person, in person may be better? Need to gain understanding of child protection here, do adults in groups with teens need to be vetted?
General discussion groups to allow for skill sharing and discussion of personal experiences and advice for others
Also bring in other practitioners for areas such as CBT that may be beneficial to the community
Group and individual based intervention for all ages & stages of transition, including general support groups and more structured workshops to deal with challenges encountered by the trans community
Informed by meeting with Vanessa as she said this is an area a lot of people struggle to envisage - how do I explain to people who I am now? How do I make sense of this?
Focus on occupational story-telling, skill building, social interaction with others in the community, resilience training (CBT?), guided by 3Bs and D
Centered on the idea of making sense of who the person was, who they self-identify as and how to make sense of these elements.
Tackling the gendered notions of occupations
Now that I am male can I no longer enjoy fashion? Now that I am female can I no longer enjoy rugby?
Potential for OT advocacy around occupations like sport participation which tend to separated by gender
Intertwining of past occupational profile and current / future gender identity
AOTA Domain & Process links
Hygiene & grooming (mainly around dressing)
Health management & maintenance
Informal educational needs or exploration
Leisure exploration & participation
Social participation in trans community
Personal context - who was I? Who am I know? Who do I want to be?
Linked to quality of life, health & wellness and well-being
Potential group sessions that might arise as a result of general conversation
Yoga
Focusing on the body in ways other than gender - tackle gender dysphoria? (no mirrors in room to focus away from how they look) - 'look at how strong my body is as I can do this pose', 'my strong arms allow me to do a handstand' - relaxation technique for those with possible anxiety? - method of mindfulness
Cons - binding and tucking may be an issue, not all members may be able to engage with yoga (may have physical limitations), would need suitable space for this activity, how would this work online?
Not specifically gender focused
Teni goal 3?
Sessions around dressing, binding and tucking
allow for sharing of skills and learning of new skills
Can be both led by group members and OT
'Becoming' the internal version of themselves and learning how to express this in a safe and welcoming environment - those who have fully transitioned have the opportunity to act as 'mentors' to others by sharing their tips, skills and experiences with others
exploring how to dress in a way that expresses the self
Child protection?
Teni goal 3
CBT - facilitated by qualified CBT therapist
Exploring and challenging the notion of pre-empting negative experiences in public / private spheres
CBT as a tool for resilience
Links to comments made by Vanessa in the meeting around people pre-empting something negative being said if they were to present in their preferred gender
Teni goal 1 - empowerment?
School / college / work
How to address issues around gender neutral facilities and uniforms / dress codes
Potential here for 1:1 session wherein OT can liaise with work / school environment and advocate for changes / additional supports for the individual
Explore coping mechanisms used by other group members with lived experience - building on resilience
Teni goal 2
Cooking / nutrition sessions
Not gender focused
Skill building / sharing exercise
Focus on healthy living and lifestyle - challenge to gender dysphoria - treat the body you are in now with respect - building self-worth ? - how do you 'be' while you are awaiting surgery?
Teni goal 3 - celebrating who you are and participate in the present
Preparation around gender confirmation surgery / reality of transitioning
Pre-habilitation - empowered with the realities of the procedure and prepared for recovery
Remove the mystery around the surgery and ensure the individual is emotionally, physically and mentally prepared for this change
Similar to superwoman (?) workshop currently being undertaken by teni - good opportunity to bring the teni team in here and involve them in the group sessions?
Teni goal 2?
