Proprietary names
Name of a specific product, which then becomes the name of that object in general e.g Hoover
Abbreviating words

Clipping
New word made by shortening an existing word, without changing the meaning e.g. pianoforte = piano
Recycling words
Compound
Combining whole existing words, sometimes with a hyphen - often removed as compound is accepted e.g. e-mail = email

Blend
Elements from two words are combined, and overlapped in some way e.g. smog
Archaic words
Words that have drifted out of use, but may still be present in some context e.g. cassette
Obsolete words
Words that have drifted out of use, usually not used in modern language, instead found in books, where the meaning would have to be searched in order to understand e.g. twattle
