One day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich (Section 4)
One of the most significant events of this section, is when Shuhov´s wife tells him about the carpet bussiness. It basically consists on putting different designs over carpets, while selling them in multiple sheets. Lots of people were making themselves wealthy with this bussiness. Nevertheless, the main risk was that in included several bribes in order to persist, as it had no government control.
"There was easy money to be made, you see, and made fast". "Easy money weights light in the hand and it does not give you the feel you earned it".
The narrator expresses that the novel is taking place in1951. Shukhov left his home around ten years earlier, in 1941, when the USSR entered WWII.
"A new year, 1951..."
"Shukhov had left home on June 23, 1941".
Shukhov realises how even the camp life has not destroyed Alyoshka´s faith. He affirms that even 25 five years of hard labour mean nothing to them.
"Alyoshka gazed at the sun and smiled happy, a smile on his lips". "His cheeks were sunken, he lived strictly on his rations, he earned nothing".
