Brandon | Reshmina

Her sister, Marzia, was arranged to marry an older man when she turned 16.
Her brother, Pasoon, Will be joining the Taliban when he becomes old enough.
Her older sister, Hila, died before she could be married off. She got deaded by the American soldiers.

Brandon met a few people in the tower. They were all extremely confused and worried. There was a woman named Marni, someone named Shavinder, Stephen, and Mike.

The American soldiers are raiding their village. They don't mean any harm, but they are searching the houses.
Someone told the American Soldiers that they had weapons in the village to lure them into the village so they could harm them on their way out.
Brandon and 4 other people were trapped in an elevator. Steam was filling the elevator, and they were trying to create a hole in the wall. Eventually, they were able to make a small hole just large enough for Brandon to fit through. The people convinced Brandon to go through, even though they had no idea where it led. No matter where it led though, it was certainly a better place than in the elevator that was slowly filling with steam and gas, making it hard to breath properly.
Reshmina wanted to tell the Americans about the plan, but it was too late. Pasoon convinced her to go back home without him. She hoped that Mariam and Pasoon would be ok.
-
When Anaa was younger, Women had more rights. Now in Afghanistan, Women barely have any rights at all.
-
"Is it any wonder your mother wishes only for you to be a good wife and marry to a good husband? Anaa asked Reshmina. She has never known a better Afghanistan as I do. All she wants is to protect you from hope."
I don't think Reshmina's mother wants her to have hope or believe in anything but being married off to a good husband because she does not want her to be disappointed. She doesn't want Reshmina to get her hopes up.
Reshmina thinks that she wants to become a translator. She goes up to the mountain to practice her reading and English. She found an American who was injured and had lost his eyesight. She thinks about helping him, but then remembers what the Americans did to her sister. She wants revenge, or badal on the Americans. The American hears her drop her notebook, and he asks for help.
Pashtunwali: if a Pashtun wrongs you, you have the right to seek revenge or badali.
Nanatali: if someone asks for your help, you have to help them.

Brandon had to use an axe from a fire extinguisher. He took a swing at the hole in the dry wall, but then One of the men took it from him and made a huge hole big enough for Marni to fit though. Eventually, they expanded the hole large enough for Chavendar, Stephen, and Mike to fit through.
Just minutes after they got out of the elevator, the Elevator fell all the way to the ground.
Chavendar says that the safest way to get out was to go up to the roof so that helicopters could pick them up from there, but they don't know that the whole building is going to collapse.

We think it's crazy that Marni wants to go get her purse, but she has no idea that the tower is going to fall.
The soldier will not let Reshmina leave, so she comes up with a plan where she will slowly walk to her home and practice her English on the way so that the Soldier could follow her. When they arrived at their home, she pretended she didn't know the soldier and asked for help from her father.
Reshmina doesn't lie very often, but when she does it is for the good of others.
The American soldiers name is Taz. He is called Taz because he has a little tasmanian devil stuffed animal. It's like the little cartoon character that spins around and destroys things.
Reshminas mother, Mor, does not like the idea of taking care of an American Soldier in their home.
Reshmina had hope that should would be like Mariam, but then Mariam died. Now Reshmina has no hope. Her mother was right, Hope is dangerous.
Pasoon, Reshmina, and Baba were arguing about helping the American Soldier and Pasoon left the house. Anaa said that he usually comes back after an argument with Baba, but we don't know if he will this time.
Baba is willing to risk his life in order to help this American Soldier. Even after all the Americans did to Baba, his family, and his community, he is still offering help to Taz.
Taz was extremely sad when he hears that all of his soldier friends have died. He states that they were all like family, and it was very hard to let them go.
Brandon is really brave. He acts more mature in this book than most 9 year olds would. He didn't break down in tears or anything, but instead he is helping people escape from the building.
Brandon feels guilty for leaving his father. He thinks his father might be panicking and worrying about Brandon. His dad has no idea where he is.
Brandon started to worry about his father. He was wondering what he was doing, or if he was even alive. He kept on climbing the stairs to try and find his father. At some point, he found himself in a room with some sort of liquid leaking from the celing and walls. At first, he was afraid that it was gasoline but after smelling it he assumed that it was just water and continued searching for his father. He was climbing some stairs but then he fell down and so he used some prior knowledge and used skateboard tricks to help him climb the stairs. He got to the top. Brandon then walked out onto the 89th floor but there isn't anything there. The floor is literally gone.
Pasoon was influenced by his friends to join the Taliban, so his thoughts and ideas are very different than Reshminas.
Pasoon is not a very good person. He lies and manipulates to get what he wants, and puts himself before anyone else.
Reshmina and Pasoon are very different. Pasoon does not think about what he does before he does it, but Reshmina is always thinking about the consequences. When Pasoon goes on without Reshmina, He is probably going to do something stupid without thinking and get hurt.

Brandon was imaginig himself falling off the building from where the 89th floor once was when he noticed a helicopter. They tried to help him, but there was no where for them to land.
-
While Reshmina was out looking for her brother, an Avalanche happened and it almost crushed Reshmina and her brother. Pasoon grabbed Reshmina and they started running alongside the cliff. As they were running, Reshmina tripped. She was holding onto the cliff, and Pasoon was trying to pull her up. Then they felt something hovering below them. It was a helicopter, with a minigun larger than Reshmina herself pointed directly at her.
The person that helped Brandon was someone that he and his father had met earlier that day named Richard. Brandon explained his problem, and together they made their way up the building.
Brandon and Richard did not expect to see what they did on the 93rd floor. The whole floor was on fire. Richard tried to convince Brandon to go back down with him, but Brandon refused. He said he needed to find his father.
They couldn't go up any further. The plane crashed into the floor above him. They had to go back down. Richard tried to comfort Brandon by reminding him that his father would be alright, because the fire was on the floor below him. He felt better and they started going by down in the direction the came from.
Pasoon was able to get Reshmina off the side of the cliff. They ran off to hide in a building. Reshmina passed out an awoke surrounded by people and camels.
The people were praying. Reshmina prayed for another pathway for her brother, Pasoon.
Reshmina and her brother found a small family. They stayed there for a little while and had a meal. Not long after they arrived, Pasoon said he had to leave and ran away. Reshmina followed him, trying to get him to come back. He then claims that nothing she could do could stop him, but then she pulled out Pasoons toy airplane.
While Richard and Brandon were searching one of the offices, Brandon saw someone falling from one of the towers.
Brandon and Richard met 2 people standing in front of the elevator doors. Inside the elevator were 5 people, 3 men and 2 women. The elevator was filled with smoke, rubble, and fire.
One of the women in the Elevator decided to run through the flames. She covered her face and ran through the fire, everything was fine for a few seconds and then she burst into flames. The people outside of the elevator got water and tried to help the woman but her skin was literally bubbling and she had no hair. They looked back at the elevator car, but it wasn't there. It had fallen and they were sure anyone who was in there died.
When Hila was killed, she was 16. It happened on her Wedding day 2 years ago, they were just partying and celebrating. They fired rifles to celebrate, but that triggered an American missle. An American Drone hovered over them, holding onto a black missle. The drone let go of the bomb and it exploded and killed Hila.
Reshmina claims that they are stuck in the past. While everyone else in the world gets to make and learn new things and move forward, they were just forced to stay in the same village while everyone around them is fighting and hurting each other.
Brandon/Reshmina
Reshmina lost Pasoon. She started to look for him, under every rock and tree. She looked for awhile when she noticed some faint footsteps in the sand. She lead to a cave. There were caves all over the mountain. Reshmina went into the cave and saw a lantern, and if there was a lantern, there was a lighter. She lit the lantern and Pasoon attacked her and she dropped the lantern. It broke and a fire started. They put it out together and then left.
Richard took Brandon to meet his friends who were close. Brandon met a blind person named Anson. Anson has a dog named Daphne and he let Brandon pet his dog. They turned on the radio, and the first station they found was some people joking about the crashes. They didn't know that they got hijacked, and they were making jokes about it. They changed the channel because they thought that was mean. The next channel was talking to someone on the 104th floor. They were calling someone on the 104th floor, and then thats when Bradon realized that he could call his dad!
-
Brandon was able to reach his father. He didn't care that Brandon had left him, he was just happy that he was okay.
The fire had taken out 7 floors, from the 93rd floor to the 100th floor.
Another plane just hit the south tower. Brandons dad wasn't calm anymore. He told Brandon to get out. His father realized that this wasn't an accident, and they were actually under attack.
Reshmina realized that Pasoon wasn't going to call the Taliban with a phone, but with a rifle. He was shooting into the air to attract the attention of the Taliban.
-
Pasoon doesn't care that by telling the Taliban they are taking care of an American he will get his whole family and possibly his whole village killed.
In Afganistan, there are lots of poppys that were grown for Heroin. They would give it to the babies because they were hungry and it would take the pain away.
Brandon and the group reached one of the lobbies. There was a man leading a group of people down the stairwell, and his phone light caught the attention of the group. They started walking towards the stairwell, but a guy with a wheelchair cut in front of Brandon and Richard. The stairwell was so narrow and there were so many people, so Richard and Brandon had to go another way.
Brandon and Richard got to the 44th floor. There were people trying to find paramedics, people trying to find other people on other floors, and people trying to find a stairwell.
While Brandon and Richard were on the 44th floor, something big crashed into the building.
Reshmina was walking through the poppy field and she accidentaly made a noise. The afghan soldier watching the poppy fields noticed her.
An elevator had fallen, and the people in it died. Brandon thought it was a plane at first and was concerned that that was the first thing that came to his mind when he heard something crash.
While Brandon was waiting for his dad to pick up the phone, someone fell from the building.
Brandon called his dad. His dad made him promise to stay with Richard. Brandon talked to him for a little more time and then his father stopped responding.
How far in time would Reshmina have to go back in order to change the moment that she was in right now?
-
-
Brandon realized that if both of his parents were gone, then he was an orphan.
If Brandon hadn't punched that kid, he would have never been here.
-
Pasoon told the Taliban about Taz, and they were coming to get them. They made Taz wear a Berhka to hide him.
-
In the lobby, there were injured people and paramedics helping them.
It took 56 minutes for the South Tower to fall. Brandon says that it has been about an hour, so the ST should be falling soon.
Reshmina could not believe how heartless her brother could be. She couldn't believe that Pasoon had pointed out her own home to the Taliban, knowing that they were going to fire a missle and blow it up, killing his whole family. Pasoon had been on this path for a very long time before this, but Reshmina never expected it would be this bad.
Pasoon might be in this book for conflict, but also to help change and develop Reshminas character. If Pasoon wasn't here, then Reshminas story would be extremely boring and easy. There would be no conflict and no build up. He develops Reshminas character and personality, Pasoon is a static character there to change the dynamic characters.
-
Reshmina and her family and other people from the village including Taz were hiding in a cave to stay away the afghan soldiers.
Taz says that one time when he was a boy he got lost in the dark and that is why he doesn't like the dark. He claims he hates being blind. This kind of relates to Brandons story, when he was trapped in the basement in the dark, alone. TAZ IS PROBABLY BRANDON LOL IM JUST SAYING
They were dropping bombs on the cave Reshmina and her village are hiding in. Taz stood to warn them, but as soon as he said something another bomb fell onto the cave and the whole ceiling fell in.
Alan Gratz probably thinks that the American Soldiers shouldn't be in Afghanistan, because not everyone there is a terrorist. The ceiling just fell on a bunch of innocent villagers in a cave hiding from bombs and missiles.
Reshmina doesn't understand why the American Soldiers are here. She doesn't know that there were terrorists in Afghanistan.
