L14 - Plant Diseases
Aphids feed on plants and cause a loss of sap from the phloem. Aphids can be controlled via predators such as lacewing and ladybirds.
A deficiency of mineral ions in plants can cause chlorosis (through magnesium deficiency) or stunted growth (through nitrate deficiency).
L15 - Plant Defences
Physical Defences:
- Cellulose cell walls
- Tough, waxy cuticle
- Bark and layers of dead cells
Chemical Defences:
- Antibacterial chemicals may be secreted.
- Poisons to deter herbivores.
Mechanical Defences:
- Thorns and hairs deter animals.
- Mimicry (presenting itself as unhealthy)
