- - - - glucose is converted to pyruvate to produce energy
      - this is anaerobic taking place in the sarcoplasm of muscle cell
      - for every molecule of glucose undergoing glycolysis 2 ATP is formed
      - before pyruvic acid is produced it is oxidised into acetyl group and carried to Krebs cycle by coenzyme A
    - - two acetyl groups diffuse into the matrix of mitochondria and complex reactions occur
      - citric acid is formed then the hydrogen is removed from it so hydrogen and carbon is given off (oxidative carboxylation)
      - carbon forms carbon dioxide and taken to the lungs, hydrogen is taken to the electron transport chain
      - 2 ATP is formed
    - - a series of chemical reactions in the cristae of the mitochondria where hydrogen is oxidised to water
      - hydrogen electrons provide the energy to re-synthesise ATP
