VIEWS
God appointed humans to look after and be in charge over what he created however there are 2 contrasting beliefs about this idea; dominion and stewardship.
dominium
belief - the idea that god gave humans power and authority over the world
religious teaching - "rule over... every living creature"
outcome - this allows christians to use natural resources and animals to make their lives better.
stewardship
belief - the idea that christians have a duty to look after the planet on behalf of god & future generations.
religious teaching - in genesis 2 god gives adam the role of the caretaker in the garden
Outcome- christians will campaign for environmental charities or choose to recycle and reduce waste.
interpretations of the creation story vary very much depending on personal beliefs and denominations.
literal christian (literalist) - they believe that creation story is literally true and therefor believe the bible is the word of god and believe it is completely true.
inspirational - believe that the bible was inspired by god, therefor, there it could be inconsistent with the truth and that there are many interpretations of it.
metaphorical (liberal) - believe that the stories are metaphors or symbolic descriptions. These christians will also accept scientific theories about the origins of the universe. the most important idea for them is the message of the genesis account of creation, which is that god created the world and gave humans a special role.
