Biomolecules
Carbohydrates
Composed of: Carbon, Hydrogen and Oxygen atoms
Found in:
-
-
Starch, glycogen (animal starch), cellulose and chitin (fiber, a special type of carb)
Used for: main source of energy as it provides energy to perform the daily task; regulation of glucose
-
Protein
Composed of: Amino acids, carboxyl group, a hydrogen atom, variable component called a side chain
Found in: Plant and animal sources such as meat and fish, eggs, dairy, products, seeds, nuts, beans, etc.
Used for: helps repair your body’s tissues, allows metabolic reactions to take place and coordinates bodily functions.
-
Lipids
-
Found in: cell membranes, cholesterol, blood cells, in the brain
Used for: energy store, insulation and to make cell membranes
-
Amino Acids
Composed of: carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen atoms
Found in: in plants, animals, dairy products
Used for: building blocks for proteins, protein synthesis, activity of some enzymes, gene expression, and redox-homeostasis
-
Polymers
Composed of: small molecules called monomers. When these monomers joined together it forms a biological/natural polymer such as proteins, starch, cellulose, and DNA
-
-
-
Monosaccharides
-
Composed of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen atoms
Found in: sweet food, plants such as sugar cane, honey, dairy products such as milk, fruits like mango, papaya, jackfruit, etc
-
Enzymes
Composed of: RNA, proteins which are polymers of amino acids
Found in the human body/digestive system - saliva, stomach, small intestine, pancreatic juice
