6 Essential Nutrients
PROTEIN
Helps the body by: providing the body building blocks and not just for muscle
Different types: Hormones, antibodies and other important substances have protein
Foods: meat, fish, eggs, nuts and beans
One Interesting fact is 16% of the average person's body weight is from protein!
CARBOHYDRATES
Helps the body: receive energy, get fuel, especially for the central nervous system and brain, protects against disease.
Different types: glucose, fiber (soluble & insoluble), and ketones
Foods: bagel, bred, tortillas, cereals, pasta, rice, fruit juice, blackberries, pineapple, strawberries and watermelon
One interesting fact is there are good carbs like fruit (blackberries are my favorite) and bad carbs (tortillas and pasta I love).
FATS
Helps the body by: supporting many of the body's functions such as vitamin and mineral absorption, blood clotting, building cells, and movement of muscles
Different Types: triglycerides, omega-3, and omega-6
FOODS: nuts, seeds, fish, and vegetable oils, avocados (I hate these), and flaxseed
One interesting fact isif you eat healthy fats it can balance blood sugar and decrease risk of type 2 diabetes and heart disease
VITAMINS
Helps the body by: fighting off disease and staying healthy. They are important for vision, skin and bones
Different Types: A, C, D, E, K, B vitamins (thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, vitamin B6, biotin, vitamin B-12, and folate)
FOODS: Oranges, Kiwi, Broccoli and Cauliflower (I love these) strawberries, and cabbage
One interesting fact is that many Americans do not get enough of many essential vitamins.
Minerals
Helps the body: to have strong bones and teeth, regulate metabolism and staying hydrated properly.
Different Types: calcium, iron, zinc, Iodine, selenium, copper, manganese, chloride and potassium
Foods: table salt, meats, milk, fresh fruits and vegetables, salmon, nuts and seeds, shellfish, seafood (shrimp is my favorite) and water (the best thing there is)
One interesting fact: there are two types of minerals, Trace Minerals and Macro minerals. Also, soda has Phosphorus which is important for bones and teeth!
WATER
Helps the body by: improving your brain function and mood, and it is what our bodies are made of and helps flush out toxins, carry nutrients to cells, hydrate the body and prevent constipation
Different types: mineral, spring or glacier, sparkling, distilled, purified, flavored or infused, alkaline, and well
Foods: Fruits and vegetables, spinach and watermelon are great, cumbers, carrots, kiwi, peaches and broccoli
One interesting fact:
is you can go weeks without food but you will not last without water for a few days! Good thing water is my favorite drink.
