Chapter 41
Tall and flat structures
An advantage of using the flat structure is that people might feel better about their job that they are further up the company and they might get job satisfaction over it.
A disadvantage of the flat structure is that people can get confused as what their job is that they have this authority but don't actually get paid that much in comparison to how many people they manage. And its harder for employees to rise through the ranks.
The flat structure has high span of control and less chains of command then the tall. Flat structures are more common in small businesses and make the business easier to manage.
One advantage of using the tall structure is that senior employees are able to train newer employees for bigger positions and there is more room to climb the corporate ladder.
Tall structures have more layers and more levels of authority and they have less span of control because less people are responsible for less people.
One disadvantage of the tall structure is that it takes longer to get things done in that you have to move up more levels of authority for change and it might take so long to implement that it doesn't matter.
