Tapu, the ritual restrictions that could be permanently placed over an area or a person. This includes: special knowledge places and gestures. Sometimes a tapu can be lifted by performing a special ritual, whakanoa.

Maori lived in villages with their family and Hapu
Their villages were made from local materials and would be near food sources
Sometimes Maori would go off and camp out somewhere to find other food and resources
