Dubstep is a musical genre derived from bass that emerged in the late 1990s and early 2000s in London, England. It is the culmination of a lineage of genres such as step garage, broken beat, drum and bass, jungle, dub and reggae.
Some dubstep musicians have incorporated external influences into the style, from dub-cut techno in the style of Basic Channel to classical music or heavy metal.
