Why White Students Need Multicultural and Social Justice Education Host:…

- - - - Grandfather as a prejudice Chicago police officer in the 1940s & 1950s against Irish, Catholic, Italian, etc. which are all now considered white. I didn't understand his prejudice until this class because I saw all those people as white skinned rather than different cultures.
    - - White fragility & Dr DiAngelo! We discussed this earlier this semester. I love it when things come around!
      - I can totally identify with I said something controversial, and it didn't go well. So I need to learn a better/stronger vocabulary, so I can stand up and say stuff because it's needed and the right thing to do. We all need to speak out and not be scared off by "not" saying the right thing. Trying...teachable moments.
    - - We may provide information from various cultures, the contribution approach. "This person of color did this...during this time." White perspective with an addition of a piece or special project for people of color.
  - - - Understanding how my people were mistreated will help with empathizing with people of color.

      - Recognizing that we may watch FOX News because it agrees with our own personal bias...I don't watch FOX, but my cousin does, and now I better understand why.
    - - I like the science class story about the student wondering why all the students in the picture are black. Teachable moment of a micro-aggression rather than reacting.
      - Teachers need to see and understand what perspectives are represented in their curriculum.
      - Teachers need to address the under and over representation of cultures.
    - - Grading as a privilege.
      - People assume that privilege means money which is not the only kind - there's religious, gender, racial, white, and many more

      - How can I use my privilege to help dismantle racism?
      - I have a seat at the table because of my privilege, and how can I help use this to dismantle racism?
      - Need to move towards "all men are created equally" as a reality and not just words on paper.
