B206 Week 22 Peer Review
activity 22.1 what kind of learner are you?
Surface
this can be seen when a student memorises information and takes it at face value, and when he or she doesn’t question assumptions and premises
need to remember information
may not fully understand what you are learning
Strategic
this approach to learning is evident when the student addresses the topic in sufficient detail to complete assessment tasks and gain marks, searching for cues as to the information needed to do so
can gain good marks
Don't get as much out of your study as possible
Deep
his is where the student searches for understanding of the underlying concepts, and shows a willingness to question the starting premise and to change it in the light of new information and understanding.
understand the material better = engaging in critical analysis and critical understanding
hard work and unsettling/confusing
Evidence of deep learning
OU notes
Indicators of deep learning could include:
questioning or discussing the meaning of the concept(s) on which the assessment focuses (denoting a search for understanding of the underlying concepts)
testing how far such concepts hold good in a specific situation such as a chosen organisation, personal situation or other example from wider reading
comparison of the concept(s) with alternative explanations of how things work (for example, social class as a predictor of customer behaviour contrasted with age).
show understanding of a concept by explaining it, applying it to and example and discuss both the strengths and limitations
Deep learning and assessment criteria
Structured appropriately with proper references and word count
presents topic vividly
shows understanding of the flow of the topic and arguments
confidence is summarising and prioritising content
Relevant choice of a concept or theory from Block 4 (as listed in the TMA question itself)
focusing on one thing allows for demonstration of deeper understanding
Illustration and critical analysis demonstrating understanding (e.g. through a well-chosen example as evidence, well-related to the discussion with a clear point that’s obvious to the reader/viewer)
shows confidence and understanding
Effective use of presentation software to communicate knowledge and understanding in a poster combining image, text and design
well considered images shows an understanding
Engagement with relevant ethical and business/commercial issues (as part of the critical analysis)
well considered issues could demonstrated understanding of topic and better examples used
Giving effective feedback
learning and assessment engages both cognitive and affective behaviour
be aware of and sensitive to affective aspects
good/useful feedback:
include something positive. we learn from positive reinforcement
give reasoning for comments so the receiver can understand why
make it impersonal
don't be too negative or vague
personal thoughts for draft poster
add in understanding of the benefits of a concept
answer why the concept is necessary and question if it is still necessary
helps to understand and predict behaviour which is beneficial for marketing therefore it is still necessary to do this somehow. is FLC model the best way?
show the comparison of the concept with an alternative explanation
add in that age has been shown to be less successful predictor of behaviour than FLC
add in-text references to images
in the conclusion answer the question in the title. is the flc holding women back?
Or, how useful is the Family Life Cycle to an understanding of contemporary customer behaviour?
