Sociology 20 mark Research methods questionare education
Conclusion
nuance
Whilst questionnaires do have many problems, Other research methods such as interviews or observations come with the same, if not more disadvantages , making them worse choices as a research method than questionaires.
Whilst questionares may not be effective, they are more effective then the other options a researcher may have at there disposal, Making it the best option in a difficult area to research
Judgement
using questionnaires in order to investigate the role of parents in their children's education is a
Mostly
ineffective method
Reasoning
This is because researchers may receive
Lack of responses
and the responses they will receive may be
False or partial with the truth
as parents may lie in order to not apear like they are bad .However the
Pratical Benefits
such as Questionarres being quick and efficent for the researcher to use to gather data
P3
Pratical benefits
Evidence and analysis
the other benefit of quesitonares is they can be filled out at home at any time, this solves the issue of only being able to interview parents out side the normal working hours, With M/c parents being more likely to attend these interviews, as they are likely to have normal working hours, this would mean that W/c families would be underepresented in the study
.This can be seen in item C which states “one advantage of of these is that they can be completed outside the school setting”
main benefit quick and extremely efficient
even if the sociologist was only investigating one school there would be a large number of parents who would need to be interviewed and a questionaire is a way of gathering data of them all quickly
Mini Judgements
Although as stated before that questionnaires may receive low response rates, It is likely that other viable methods such as interviews will receive even lower as they are more time consuming for the parents and they have to come into the school in order to do them.Overall this shows the benefits of using questionnaires in order to investigate the role of parents in their children's education being that they are quick for the parents to fill out and do not require them to come into the school setting to do so.
Topic Sentences
However there are some benefits to using questionnaires in order to investigate the role of parents in their children's giving a argument as to why questionares might be somewhat effective in the investigation
Intro
Judgement
Questioners are a somewhat ineffective way of investigating the effect parents have on their child's educational achievement
Listed Three factors
Aswell as answers being partial with truth, A low response rate for many reasons is also a issue with questionares
However there are some pratical benefits of using quesitonare for the researcher
The main reason for questionares being innefective is answers may be partial with the truth
P1
untrue answes, partial with the truth
Topic Sentence
The main problem with using questionnaires in order to investigate the role of parents in their children's education is that parents
may lie or be partial with the truth i
n order to appear as better parents on the study as they feel as though they are being judged
Evidence and analysis
W/C parents who have less time to spend with their children may feel self concious about the time they spend with them
this may lead to them lying on the questionare in order to appear better .This ruins the credibility of the investigation.
as the questionares are likely done online or postal to save time, they is no way to validate what the parents are saying meaning parents could lie without those lies being uncovered and removed from the experiment
M/c parents may have more pride and care about reputation, this will make them more likely to lie on questionare in order to uphold reputation of "good parents"
Mini Judgement
Overall, This shows how questionnaires are a ineffective way to investigate the role of parents in their children's educational achievement as parents may give misleading answers as they feel they are being judged on their parenting
Nuance
However One way a researcher could work around this is by making the questionnaires anonymous. This way the parents feel as though they have more security and will make it more likely that they give honest answers, as they do not feel as though they are being judged but this may create further issues when examining the data and may lead to parents not filling out the questionnaires outright, as there is no way it can be linked back to them making it a inadequate solution
P2
Lack of Response
Topic sentence
Anotehr problem researchers may face when investigating....... is a
Lack of responses
aswell as the detail they may recieve from those responses
Mini judgement
Overall, this shows how questionnaires are ineffective in investigating parents role in child's educational achievement as a lack of returns as well as middle classes being more likely to return the questionnaire will create a sample that is to small and too biased to be considered a credible experiment to build a case study on.
Evidence and analysis
Aswell as a lack of detail , a sociologist may not recieve many filled out questionares back for a variety of reasons
a large number of parents from either W/C backgrounds who lack resources for virtual questionare or may find the elaborate language code challeging to fill out.
this will mean that w/c families will be unrepresented in questionare and maybe overlooked in the study. This will create an inaccurate representation of the area as only middle and upper class parents will have returned their questionnaires.
parents who do not care as much about there childrens education may be less likely to fill out questionare as they see it as unimportant. this skews thedata in favor of parents caring and taking time to help children education
aswell as making representaion disproportionate .THis will reduce the sample size making the investigation less credible
detail
Questionares are often short to maintain being user friendly, and make it more likely for people to respond as it takes less time to fill out.
THis means that the lack of detail that will be returned may not be enough to build a case study around
be seen in item c that states “Operationalising concepts in questions can be difficult. Furthermore , for a variety of reasons some questionnaires may not be returned*
