Where Angels Fear to Tread
Characters
Lilia Herriton
Since Lilia married Charles, Mrs. Herriton tried bossing her around - telling her what to say and how to act.
However, Lilia "would not settle down in her place among Sawston matrons".
After her husband's death, her trip to Italy acts as an escape from life and rules.
Nonetheless, she soon discovers that, even in Italy, she can't find happiness.
She unexpectedly dies during childbirth.
Caroline Abbott
Caroline is initially described as quite dull, however there is something remarkable about her.
She is "good, quiet, dull, and amiable".
Caroline's moral goodness in choosing to not separate the baby from Gino, the father, inspires Philip and her overall greatness makes him a better person.
Caroline plays a huge role in Philip's growth throughout the novel.
Philip Herriton
Philip is initially presented as an extremely arrogant, unlikeable young man. However, as the novel progresses, he unexpectedly grows immensely.
Philip is extremely educated yet he is unable to use his knowledge.
By the end of the novel Philip recognises the social hypocrises and does not limit himself to that: he resists them.
The experience of life and death, which he had never had before, makes him a better person.
This change occurs especially after Gino's baby dies in his arms and after he makes the conscious choice of keeping his love for Caroline to himself.
Mrs. Herriton
Mrs. Herriton represents the English society of the time. She symbolises blind arrogance and hypocrisy.
The initial image of her stretching a furrow with a stick symbolises her approach to life: bossing people around to follow her orders.
"Mrs. Herriton scratched a furrow with a pointed stick."
Her main concern is the family's reputation, something that Philip discovers when she sends him to get the baby in Italy once the news got out, when she had showed no interest previously.
Gino Carella
Gino is not a great husband to Lilia - he cheats, shouts, and forbids her from walking alone.
He had "a good strong will when he chose to use it"
Gino is passionate but aggressive. However, he is a great father towards his baby. He is extremely loving towards his son, impressing Caroline.
Harriet Herriton
Harriet reflects her mother in character and morals - or lack of.
There is nothing exciting in her life, bringing her to impose annoying, strict, rules on everyone around her, making her very unlikeable.
Harriet serves to contrast the growth of her brother as she remains the same even after having caused the death of the baby.
Harriet doesn't even feel sorry for what she did, referring to the death as an "unlucky accident".
