Karma
Belief of cause and effect. A person's social position in the next life is determined by this conduct in the present life

Reincarnation
A person is born, lives, dies, and is reborn again many times. Souls are reborn until they are pure enough to be with the creator, Brahma
Sacred Texts
Shruti
The 'heard' texts, originated from the divine. They are widely accepted and followed for beliefs and practices. The are commonly memorised. They are a overall guide to lead to reincarnation and 'moksha'.
Vedas
The word 'Vedas' means knowledge. They are written in Sanskrit and aren't translated so can only be interpreted by Brahmins. Explains how the Atman can be united with Brahman. They are split into 4; Rig-Veda, Yajur-Veda, Sama-Veda, Atharva-Veda.
Upanishads
Referred to as teachings, as they are texts that give guidance to life. Give answers to ultimate reality and the purpose of soul. Introduces the idea of Karma as a core belief.
Smriti
Known as the 'remembered' texts. It explains the Shruti scriptures. It is therefore, also, a guide to lead to reincarnation and 'moksha'.
Independent Epic Stories
Bhagavad Gita
Epic story 'separate' from the other texts as it gives an example of teachings on how Hindus should live in the perspective of a human hero 'Aruna'. Sometimes comes under the Smriti.

The caste system
Hierarchy in which a person's occupation and position in life is determined by the circumstances of their birth.
Brahmins: Priests, Teachers, Judges; usually don't own land therefore need other castes to work the land and provide for them.

Vaisyas: Skilled Traders, Merchants, Farmers.
