Historical context
Baroque period happened in a social, economic, religious and political depression.

At the same time, a division was ocurring between absolutist monarchies (France and Spain) and parlamentary monarchies (England)
The artistic movements were dominated by a pessimistic vision of existence, in contrast to the Renaissance idealisation.
In the world of science it was thought that the truth could be found through experimentation (empiricism) and the use of reason (rationalism). (Baroque scientists: Galileo, Kepler, Newton...)
In literature, some of the greatest writers in history were born in this period such as Shakespeare, Miguel de Cervantes, Calderón de la Barca, Molière, Lope de Vega...
Characteristics

It used contrasting elements (changes of dynamics, tempo and rhythm) and overelaborate melodies.
It was based on the diatonic scales that we know, with their scale degrees and functions. This is why it sounds more familiar to us than music from previous periods.
It had an insistent, mechanical rhythm, with strong, repeated beats.
