Physiology
to provide resistance to diseases directly (cell attack) and indirectly (releasing mobilizing chemicals and protective antibody molecules)
-
Cells Involved
B cells- have the ability to make anti-bodies and they are part of the 3rd line defense and humoral response
-
Helper T cells- part of the 3rd line of defense, helps activate other white blood cells and part of the cell-mediated and humoral response
Ch. 21c Notes
Mast cells- apart of the second line of defense and assists with allergic as well as inflammatory responses (release histamine- to dilate cells and cause leakiness)
Cytotoxic T cell- part of the 3rd line of defense, destroys infected cells, and part of the cell-mediated response
T & B Memory cells, part of the 3rd line of defense, stores "memory" of the pathogen, and part of the humoral and cellular response.

Disorders (Immune sys)
-
Immunodeficiencies
-
immunodeficiency- congenital or acquired conditions that impair functions or production of immune cells or molecules
-
Hypersensitivities- immune responses to perceived (otherwise harmless) threat that cause tissue damage
Immune sys.
-
Adaptive defense sys.-a specific defense sys. that eliminates almost any pathogen or abnormal cell in body
