Types of Computer System
Desktop/server
-
Servers
Servers are often managed by highly trained staff. Servers provides a service for the computer systems that are connected to it.
-
Servers are highly powerful and expensive machines. Servers often do not have a desktop or a keyboard attached. Just the ports that allow connections. The server manager can administers the server by connecting to it.
Servers provides services and may provide multiple services. This is where some extra considerations have to take place.
If the server is overloaded on one service, then the additional one may be negatively impacted.
-
If there is a network issue from the server to the rest of the network, then all of its services will be unavailable.
When combining services to a server, you need to think about data security. For example, if you combine a file server and a web server, the files from the file server service may be in danger of being stolen because the web server is connected to the internet.
Tablet/Hybrid
Tablet
-
-
Applications can be downloaded from specific app stores. Though, tablets tend to have less available software than desktops.
Tablets tend to have the capability to allow the user to connects input devices like keyboards, mice, USBs.
Hybrid
A hybrid device is a mix of a laptop and a tablet. These are usually sold as 'all in one' because you can use it as a laptop and then remove the screen and use it as a tablet when you want.
-
Hybrid are built to be able to run all the applications that a desktop computer system can run as well as tablet software. Some may even change the user interface when the screen is detached to suit the kind of user interface you would expect from a tablet, and vice versa when you have the screen attached to the keyboard, the user interface will change to suit what you would expect from a desktop computer systems user interface.
Hybrids have not yet found mainstream appeal because it is seen that the hybrid feature of the device is a compromise between a desktop and a tablet rather than it being both a fully functional desktop and a fully functional tablet. It is seen that one form may be better performed by the OS than the other.
Smartphone
-
Applications are installed through an app store than is designed for the smartphones environment and are vetted and checked by the app store owners. The app stores then to be pre built to the phone. Apps can be free and paid for.
Smartphones tend to have a CPU of the same kind of power of a low end laptop and run of a battery. The technology behind batteries are becoming more innovative with battery charging becoming faster. Some charging methods are even wireless using charging mats.
Smartphones usually allow the user to connect the the internet via WIFI and 4G. Some phones introducing 5G technology.
-
Internet of Things
The internet of things, often shortened to IoT, is technology that aims to embed network & internet connectivity in a wide range of products that do not traditionally have it. This is a huge and growing market of products.
-
There are many advantages to this technology, however, the technology has been criticized for its lack of security. These products have been known to be easily hackable which could give rise to security and privacy concerns. Some internet connected devices such as the roomba are known to send data they collect to organizations in countries with lenient data security laws.
-
Quantum
Quantum computers are a very different type of technology compared to other computer systems. Traditional computers use binary to store data. The binary digits (bits) always store either a 1 or 0. In quantum computers, data is in a quantum state. At any point it can contain either a 1 or 0.
Many organizations have been rushing to build a working quantum computer. It is believed that it will be able to perform processes that a traditional computer just can't do.
