Immigration
migrants from east had to be 26 with family so they had incentive to return
when they came back, they were allowed to keep consumer goods from the west to stay content and reduce the pressure on consumer goods in the east
they could only travel for 6 weeks at a time

Music
could not prevent western music from influencing the eastern youth
pop music was known as 'beat'
it was very popular among the youth but in 1965, it was officially declared taboo
2500 young people protested
Film
In 1982 it was estimated that 70% of cinema-goers were young.
In the main, the SED saw films as engendering support for the regime and depicting communist allies sympathetically.
Films were made about anti-fascism
Radio
much of the GDR was subject to western radio
it had high quality news, popular entertainment and satire
TV
By 1961 there were 1 million TV sets in the GDR
So many people watched Western television, even members of the SED themselves
By 1971, 85% of the GDR families owned a TV.
