PART 3: STORAGE AND DATA PRESENTATION
SYSTEM UNIT
Case that contains electronic components of the computer used to process data.
Common components inside the system unit:
Processor
Memory
Adapter cards: sound card & video card
Drive bays
Power supply
MOTHERBOARD:
Main circuit board of the system unit
Contains expansion slots, processor chips, and memory slots
Also called system board
PROCESSOR
CENTRAL PROCESSING UNIT: Interprets and carries out basic instructions that operate a computer.
Control unit directs and coordinates operations in computer
Arithmetic logic unit performs arithmetic, comparison, and logical operations
STORAGE
Holds data, instructions, and information for future use.
Storage medium is physical material used for storage
Capacity
Number of bytes (characters) a storage medium can hold.
examples are :kilobyte, megabyte, gigabyte, terabyte, petabyte, exabyte, zettabyte, yottabyte.
TYPES OF STORAGE:
Storage medium is nonvolatile—contents retained when power is off
Memory is volatile—holds data and instructions temporarily
MAGNETIC DISKS
Miniature hard disk:
Provide greater storage capacities than flash memory
Smaller than notebook computer hard disks
A pocket hard drive is a self-contained unit
External hard disks and Removable hard disks:
External hard disk—freestandinghard disk that connects to system unit
Removable hard disk—hard diskthat you insert and removefrom hard disk drive
Online storage
Service on Web that provides storage for minimal monthly fee
Files can be accessed from any computer with Web access
Large files can be downloaded instantaneously
Others can be authorized to access your data
Floppy disk
Portable, inexpensive storage medium (also called diskette)
OPTICAL DISKS
Flat, round, portable metal discs made of metal, plastic, and lacquer
Can be read only or read/write
Most PCs include an optical disc drive
CD-ROM
Compact disc read-only memory
Cannot erase or modify contents
Typically holds 650 MB to 1 GB
Commonly used to distribute multimedia and complex software
DVD-ROM
Must have DVD-ROM drive or DVD player to read DVD-ROM
Stores databases, music, complex software, and movies
PC Cards and Express Card Modules
Adds capabilities to computer
Credit-card-sized device commonly used in notebook computers
Miniature Mobile Storage Media
Storage for small mobile devices
Allow mobile users easily to transport digital images, music, or documents to and from computers and other devices.
Three types : flash memory card, USB flash drives, and smart card.
common types of flash memory cards
compact flash
secure digital ( sd)
microSD
miniSD
xD picture card
memory stick
memory stick pro duo
USB Flash Drive
Plugs in a USB port on a computer or mobile device
Storage capacities up to 64 GB
smart card
Stores data on microprocessor embedded in small card
Input, process, output, and storage capabilities
