Medications:
Prednisone 5 mg PO daily
Use: prevents release of substance in body that causes inflammation
Teaching: Take with food, swallow it whole, If missed dose, skip the missed dose if it is almost time for next scheduled dose.
Side effects: Blurred vision, swelling, SOB, severe depression, high blood pressure.
Furosemide 20 mg PO daily
Use: Diuretic, prevents body from absorbing too much salt/ treats hypertension.
Teaching: Avoid getting up too fast from lying or sitting, avoid dehydration, avoid alcohol.
Side effects: Ringing in ears, light-headed, muscle spasms, high blood sugar kidney problems
ASA/Oxycodone 1 to 2 tables every 4-6 hours PRN
Use: Treat moderate to severe pain, use for surgical site.
Teaching: Take with food, swallow capsule whole, risk of addiction.
Side effects: Low cortisol, confusion, cool, clammy skin, slow heart rate, shallow breathing
Aspirin extra strength
Use: Anti-inflammatory, arthritis pain
Teaching: Drink with a full glass of water
Side effects: hives, facial swelling, asthma, shock
