Constraints in Online and Teaching and Learning in TVET education during the COVID-19 pandemic
Introduction
Online learning is the learning supported with electronic technology.
This is due to the closure of all the colleges and universities during pandemic
Tradition learning had switch to online and distance learning
The implementation of the teaching & learning process is based on online classes and portals to access the courses.
Problem Statement
The higher institutions dramatically changed their physical face-to-face classes to virtual online classes.
The findings of the study revealed that the various challenges faced by students due to the use of online classes were identified.
This new norm required everyone involved in the learning process to get up to speed with the changes in the way they are taught.
The complexity of the online learning environment and the involvement of students were also highlighted.
school cancellations in Asia due to coronavirus have resulted in millions of students falling behind in school as classes move online (Nuurrianti Jalli, 2020).
Research Questions
What are the factors of adapting online classes in TVET and polytechnic courses?
What are the constraints with online classes in TVET and polytechnic courses?
What are the recommendations to mitigate those challenges?
Significance of the study
Highlighted the various factors that affect the success of online education.
Difficulties faced by lecturer & students during online learning
The importance of technology in the mode of online learning
Implication and Discussion
The Ministry of Higher Education
36.9% of students across the country are devoid of any electronic devices
Minister (Education) Dr Mohd Radzi Md Jidin, stated that at-home use of electronic learning hardware and devices is generally limited and the ministry is doing everything possible to deal with the problem. (Chan et al, 2020).
Students online learning challenges
Poverty and slow internet drive students’ away
Since students are all off-campus, it's difficult to keep up with the course's technical requirements
Resistance to change hampers their ability to learn online, and it takes time for them to become familiar with online learning methods
Students have difficult time adapting online learning
students are demotivated in study during online clases
Lecturer teaching challenges
Passive students
students into mere observers, rather than active participants
Students tend to stay silent during the whole learning process.
Staying connected with students is a challenge
students excuses for not attending a class. popular reason: there is no internet at their place.
unable to reach out to the students for updates ( tasks, assignment, discussion)
Suggestion and recommendations
Ministry offer certain reasonable student packages that provide sufficient internet data to students in collaboration with telecommunication firms for students who have difficulty accessing the internet
Online learning by using digital courseware such as presentations, short videos, quizzes, on-the-go recordings .
Lecturer should keeping in constant contact the students to ensure the they stays engaged
Lecturer should delivering ongoing feedback to help students stay motivated.
It is important to find out the areas of technical support for the connection and the areas from where problems of other technical concerns associated with tools and software may be solved (Paudel, 2021)
Lack of knowledge of operating online learning platform such as accessing Learning Management System (LMS), Mts, google meet & online learnig activities
Conclusion
This research is significance which can help the future researcher research the education system during pandemic era.
Literature Review
Factors of adapting online classes in TVET and polytechnic courses
Students have to stay at their native home, which comprises rural areas to a significant extent (Mo et al., 2021)
Due to the outbreak of the covid-19 pandemic, all the public association areas and shops in the area were shut down to minimize the spread of the illness including education institutions
Adapting online or distance education mode, as this was the only and best option during this pandemic (Yu et al., 2021).
Constraints associated with online classes in TVET and polytechnic courses
Students from rural area are most affected
The cost of a good internet connection cannot be afforded by everyone especially those who are from the lower-income backgrounds.
Online classes get interrupted due to poor internet coverage
Students had to attend online learning from home. some of the students are from rural area.
E-learning challenges & difficulties among polytechnic students and lecturers.
Students & lecturers are still not technically literate enough to handle and use smartphones and internet issues.
