Teaching Writing in ESL Online Class during Pandemic Covid-19
Introduction/background
Online classes are a new trend in Malaysia when the pandemic hits the nation severely
“No students will be left behind” policy despite schools closed. Students can continue learning from home
Teaching strategies on writing is becoming prevalent in ESL online class during the pandemic
Teachers are required to conduct classes online though they are not ready.
Students' participation is low
Problem statement
Teachers lack experience of teaching strategies in teaching writing in ESL online classes
Teachers have lack of knowledge in overcoming the problems encountered when teaching writing online
Teachers’ approaches used to engage students’ participation in ESL online classes are ineffective
Discussion
“Instructional strategy” (Warnock, 2009) -Strategy use: Usage of writing platforms for presentation such as emails, WhatsApp, Google classroom
“Collaborative Strategies” (Farahidatul Akmar et al., 2017) -Strategy use: Padlet as collaborative tool in academic writing
Using Game-Based Learning (Karadag, 2015)
Objectives
To identify the challenges faced by teachers in teaching writing in ESL online classes
To discuss methods of encouraging students’ participation in carrying out writing tasks
To study on how to enhance the strategies of teaching writing in ESL online classes among lower-form secondary school students.
Literature review
Offer opportunities to teach beyond the normal constraints of geographic and temporal borders (Warnock, 2009)
Generally, there are some writing skills covered in ESL writing lessons such as sentence writing skills, paragraph writing skills, essay writing skills, writing mechanics, stages of writing and standardised writing test skills. (Reima, 2014)
Students do not get great benefits in so-called old-style writing classes as most of them presume that writing is just for the sake of passing the exams (Farahidatul et al., 2017). The interest of writing can be boosted.
Teaching writing online is not necessarily a thing for all the teachers (Warnock, 2009) though technology has become part and parcel in our life, especially in the field of education (Farahidatul et al., 2017).
Significance of the study
Teachers will know how to provide suitable materials (apps, software) when teaching their students online
The strategies will be implemented in order for students to participate in the class and carry out writing tasks online
Conclusion
Teachers can have more fantastic ideas of making online writing class fun and engaging as well as meaningful
Teachers are aware on their roles in enhancing teaching strategies in order to teach students how to write in online class
Implications
Help the policymaker to implement the teaching strategies in the national curriculum blueprint in order for teachers to conduct lesson plan.
Help teachers to continue generating more creative ideas in terms of carrying out writing activities online even if it's not during pandemic.
(less dependent more traditional teaching)
Helps the school policy to cater teachers' needs to help teachers providing suitable platforms for them to carry out their online lessons effectively
