Made worse with destruction of hospitals making it harder to obtain treatment
Responses
Short term
Crucial aid was slow to arrive due to damage to ports
USA sent rescue teams to find survivors buried in the rubble
Bottle water and purification tablets were provided to help provide clean water
235,000 people were moved to less damaged areas outside Port-au-prince
UK government donated £20 million
Long term
Haiti became dependent on overseas aid
New homes were built to a higher standard, however 1 year on 1 million people still lived in temporary accommodation
Port in Port-au-prince needed rebuilding and so needed lots of investment
Japan
The earthquake occurred on the 11th of March 2011
It was a 9.0 on the Richter scale on a destructive plate boundary
Effects
Primary
About 16,000 people died
About 6,000 injured
Flooding in the Fukashima power plant led to people loosing power -- 4.4 million
300 hospitals were damaged along with lots of roads, bridges and railways
Secondary
Cost the Japanese government $235 billion -- most expensive natural disaster ever
Meltdown in nuclear power plant led to 8 times normal radiation levels
Liquefaction (soil becoming liquid) occurred on areas built on reclaimed lands, 1,000 homes were lost to liquefaction.
