Graphic Designer Wide Format Printing
Life Long Learner
Due to our industry relying more and more on technology, the industry is going to keep growing. With all of the advancements of technology we will see changes in all the different areas and fields within our industry.
After Graduation I plan to stay educated in my field by staying connected with groups and organizations that I have earned scholarships from. I have learned a lot about our industry from attending both in person and zoom events through these different groups. Our industry and the technology in our industry is always changing and events that I attend held by these groups and organizations help me stay up to date on things.
One of the biggest trends right now in the design industry is 3D animations. 3D animations are starting to be the popular for a company to communicate a mission or show a products purpose without having to shoot a live action production.
One thing I have really learned from my time at BGSU is that the Visual Communication Technology industry is very open and there is always something you can learn and extend on. I think if I would extend my education in the print industry. I would earn other certifications that would further me in the industry and not necessarily focus on another bachelors or masters degree.
Compensation
According to
GlassDoor
, the average salary for someone working in a Graphic Designer position in Cleveland, OH is around $39,916 a year. After conducting some research and talking with family and close members within the industry this salary is around where I should be with just graduating and entering the field. The job position is technically Graphic Design wide format printing but unfortunately when I was researching I could not find an average yearly salary for someone that does both.
For this position at FastSigns in Cleveland, Oh they are offering partial medical, vision and dental insurance. As well as paid vacation and holidays and monthly bonuses for achieving team goals. The benefits they have mentioned so far seem very reasonable but there is no talk about a 401K.
Cleveland is a big area surrounded by a lot of smaller suburbs. The cost-of-living expenses will all depend on the area I would decide to settle in. According to
AreaVibes
the cost of living in Cleveland Ohio is more than the cost of living in Bowling Green Ohio. Bowling Green is smaller than Cleveland and is ranked higher for safety and overall living. Cleveland is ranked more expensive and not the safest.
According to
Zumper
, the price to rent a two-bedroom apartment in Bowling Green is cheaper than in Cleveland. After looking over different apartments there is roughly about a $400+ difference. Two-bedroom apartments for rent in Cleveland are around the $1,200 range. Two-bedroom apartments for rent in the Bowling Green area are around the $800 range.
As someone that personally rather cook at home than go out I did a lot of research on groceries in both the Cleveland and Bowling Green areas. According to
Numbeo
the prices of goods in Bowling Green are fairly cheaper than in Cleveland. I did also conduct some research about restaurant in both areas and have seen that restaurant in Bowling Green are more affordable than Cleveland as well.
Fiscal Responsibility/Needs
After creating and looking over a budget if I were to earn the average salary for this position I would be able to meet all of my fiscal needs. There would be habits and changes that I would need to make so that I am spending my money in smarter ways.
My current short-term spending habits can really affect my long-term financial goals. I am very good personally with not going out to restaurants much. But with how fast paced my life is in college I find myself getting coffee and energy drinks a lot. After college when I am working a full-time job it will be a lot easier for me to not go out and get coffee all of the time. This way I will be able to save money for the future and be able to afford other activities that will benefit me.
After conducting research and talking to my peers I would focus more on saving money. Putting money away to pay off student loans. Focus more on saving for things that will help me better myself and for my future, for example retirement.
Long Term Goals
Once I am salaried full-time position, the first thing I would like to do is make sure I have built up enough money in my savings incase anything were to happen I can make sure my family is covered. Then after all of my loans are paid off I will probably begin to put money away so I can go on weekend trips and adventures with family and friends. Even though saving for retirement and 401K is important it is also important to make sure I still take time for myself and can get away every now and then.
According to
Zippia
graphic design management position can range between $62,000 and $84,000. Also, in the future if I ever decide to relocate the salary could change to even more.
In the long term, I would like to focus on contributing as much of my money towards things like a 401K and just into savings. In life anything is possible, and you never know what type of unexpected challenges you could face. So, I would like to focus on saving in case there would be an emergency or something you happen my family would be covered. I would also like to focus on a 401K because then I will hopefully be able to retire early enough where I could still travel and enjoy life.
Me at Work
Through the jobs I have had in high school along with my co-ops in college I have been told my work ethic is one of my strongest qualities. I have always had the same passion for each job. If I was working in a restaurant or one of my co-ops at a printing company I have always put the same effort into the job to do the best work I could. Sometimes my motivation would be low, or I would just be motivated by the thought of going home from work. But, I always did my best work to make the customers at any of my jobs have the best experience they could.
Through my job experiences I have learned to value a job that values me as a professional but most of all me as a person. Having a dream job with a large paycheck and the best benefits would be great. But, if I am not able to have time to take care of myself and am in the end draining myself and my mental health I would not be able to work for that company.
After taking the career center personality quiz my results were independent, strategic, precise, goal orientated, and perceptive. These personality types work well for my field. Having these skills in a future job will help me be able to be independent and learn on my own. But, at the same time learn and take advice from others.
In any work place I personally feel that honesty and integrity should be a big part that the company focuses on. In my future job search if a company is successful but not successful because of the right reasons I personally will not be able to start a career with that company. In my future I want to be able to start my career with a company that I can bring my talents too but where they can help me just as much.
