Each year of war

The war had started in August with both sides safe from their attacks, believing that they would bring a quick victory.
The failure of the Schlieffen Plan and Plan XVII ended this possibility and led to a war of fixed entrenchment.

Germany
In March, Germany launched its final offensive, reinforced by troops from the Russian front.

On September 29, Ludendorff advised the German government to ask for peace immediately.

Imperialism
Before WW1 some countries of Europe had made competing imperialistic claims in Africa and parts of Asia.
Because of the raw materials these areas could have, tensions around which country had the right to exploit these ran high.

Militarism
As the world entered in the 20 century, starts an arm race.

In german and Russia the military establishment began to have a greater influence on public policy this increased in militarism helped push the countries involved into war.
Nationalism
Much of the origin of the war was based on the desirve of the slavic peoples in Bosnia and Herzegovina to no longer be part of Austria-Hungary but instead be part of Serbia.

As each country tried to prove their dominance and power, the war became more complicated and prolonged.
