Nervous System
Brain- intellectual capacity
Brain Stem- consisting of the medulla oblongata, pons, and midbrain
Pons- relays sensory information between cerebrum and cerebellum
Midbrain- assists in motor reflexes associated with visual and auditory stimuli
Medulla Oblongata- regulates heart rate, blood pressure, breathing
Cerebellum- coordinates movement, posture & balance
Thalamus- Processes sensory info from the body to the cerebral cortex, and motor info going from the
cerebral cortex to the body
Hypothalamus- maintains the two H's: Homeostasis and Hormones
Limbic System- surrounds boundary between the cerebral hemispheres and the brainstem
Amygdala- has a role in emotion and behavior
Hippocampus- is crucial for forming new memories
Cerebrum- largest part of the brain
Cerebral Cortex- is the outer layer of the cerebrum
Frontal Lobe- voluntary movements, personality traits, thinking, reasoning, language
production, managing attention
Temporal Lobe- processes auditory information, language comprehension, facial recognition
Occipital Lobe- processes visual information
Parietal Lobe- processes sensory info such as touch, temperature, pain, taste
Central Nervous System-is the brain & spinal cord
Peripheral Nervous System- anything that comes out of the brain and spinal cord
Parasympathetic Nervous System- rest or digest
Sympathetic Nervous System- fight or flight
Autonomic Nervous System- regulates bodily functions NOT under conscious control
Somatic Nervous System- controls skeletal muscles
Neuron- send and receive signals
Sensory Neuron- monitor external & internal environments
Motor Neurons- carry info away from CNS
Interneuron- located entirely within CNS
Spinal Cord- nerves carry messages between the brain and the rest of the body
Axon- transmits outgoing signals to synaptic terminals
Dendrite- receive incoming signals
Synapse- where an axon terminal of one neuron meets the next cell
Neurotransmitter- bind to receptors on dendrite
