Queen Catherine of Braganza (Portuguese noblewoman), said to have made tea popular among English aristocrats when marring King Charles II (1661)
Spread in early 1600s, Dutch traders brought tea → Europe in large quantities

Tea = subject of books & poetry, emperors' favorite drink, artists' medium (pictures in tea foam = espresso art in coffee)
Consumption
1500 yrs ago food → drink, combine heat & moisture → complex & varied taste of tea leafs
Variations of preparation method = heat tea → pack portable cakes → grind powder → mix w/ hot water → create beverage (末茶 / matcha)
