Character Sketch, Paradise Carpet
Wealthy Man
The man is rich and that is explicit because the author has mentioned that:
He has an expensive car (Mercedes)
He was wearing gold rings
He had a chunky foreign watch
He was wearing a smart suit
The man also seems like an attention seeker because of the grand entry he makes and the loud reaction he has after seeing the carpet.
The man is powerful and selfish because even after Anoup told him that an average carpet takes 12 months he wanted his carpet ready in 7 months. He was using his money to oppress Anoup and force him into making the carpet in such a short amount of time.
The man is a perfectionist and very particular about the design he wants and this is clear by the way he was scrutinizing the carpet inch by inch.
Most importantly the man is rude and ill-mannered and this is visible by the way he treated the carpet after examining it. He yelled and cursed by saying the words "Idiotic". Not only that but he also trampled the carpet in the dust without thinking about the poor people who worked day and night on it.
Anoup
-
Anoup is greedy because at first when the wealthy man asked Anoup to get the carpet ready in 7 month, Anoup declined the offer but when he saw the briefcase of money he thought a little and quickly agree.
Anoup is also rude to the people that worked for him because when Rama protested about how there are not enough hours in the day to finish the carpet, Anoup harshly retorted they work at night too.
Anoup is someone who keeps his words. We know this because he promised the wealthy man that he will be ready with the carpet in 7 months and he was.
Further Anoup was also abusive because he kicked Ishwar's body and then when they rolled him over he was found dead.
Ishwar
-
He was one of the many slaves that Anoup had. He was stuck there because of the debt his ancestors took and he knew that all his life he will be stuck there and his lifetime wont be enough to pay of the debt.
Ishwar wished for freedom, he wanted to play in the daylight and not be stuck in the mud hut. He has been there for such a long time now that he has forgotten what the outside world looks like.
Ishwar had lost all hope of being free and was eager to play in the paradise garden even though he could not play outside and that is the reason why he weaved his picture on the carpet by imaging himself living in the scenery.
He wanted to study like the other children in the village. He would even try to listen and learn the alphabets and tables other village children were taught but it was no use.
At last, Ishwar is dead but the cause is a mystery. The author has kept it open for the audience to decide the cause of his death. In my opinion, it either be the fact that he worked so hard that he died due to exhaustion or he was so stressed if the customer would like the carpet or not which led to his death. It can also be that Ishwar was fed up of living like this and wanted to see what he and the others had created because of which he suicided.
