Density of materials
-
In solids there are stronger forces of attraction, this causes them to remain in a fixed, regular arrangement
Densitry of a liquid
- Place a measuring cylinder on a balance and zero the balance.
- Pour 10ml of the liquid into the measuring cylinder and record the mass.
- repeat by adding another 10ml until the cylinder is full. Do the density formula(p=m/v) and 1ml=1cm^3
-
Liquids have weaker intermolecular forces between the so they can move more freely and have an irregular structure.

Change of state
- When you heat a liquid, it boils and becomes a gas. When you heat a solid it melts to become a liquid.
- The state can also due to cooling. The particles lose energy and form bonds.
- A change of state is a physical change. You will always end up with the same substance at the end.
- The mass is conserved(number of particles remain the same)
Question
A solid is heated until it melts into a liquid. Explain how heating the solid causes this change in state.
