5 elements for selecting criteria for a suitable content
Direct Experience
This content should enable a "direct experience"
Content and materials needs to be available for the children to explore them, touch materials, investigate (direct exploration)
Content given to children should have a direct link to the subject they are studying
These materials need to be easily accessible and preferably come from their immediate environment
2, Big Idea
Using these key concepts, mixed with guided experiences will then build a foundation for more comprehensive understanding
All content should have a main point / key concept that is referred to as the "big idea"
This comprehensive understanding of basic concepts will help them to build on these concepts in later years
Developmentally Appropriate & Understandable
Work that needs to be memorised should be avoided, these complexities and abstractions will then not be understood by the child but just memorised for that time being
Content should be taught to ultimately be explored in depth later on. When a teacher gives a child rich content it gives them the opportunity to explore and deepen their knowledge on the subject
All content needs to be developmentally appropriate and understandable for the specific age group its being taught to
Having a rich foundation in knowledge will allow the child to gain multiple perspectives through exploration. This will then grow their ideas and understanding in a more meaningful and longterm way
Content (immediate environment)
Science, to be meaningfully taught, should be taught to learners through places and things that they experience in their everyday lives
In doing this, learners will then be able to use their existing knowledge and experiences to add meaning to their learning in the classroom
This is a critical component
Interests
This can be done through their personalities or even prior knowledge of content directly connecting to their immediate surroundings
The content is chosen specifically on the learners a teacher has in her classroom
Learner-initiated experiences are vital in the learning process, investigating something immediately because the child has sparked a curiosity towards the subject / idea
This will then make the lesson more fun and exciting while also being able to learn skills and competencies needed in a child's everyday life
