Ethics
Consent
-
Whenever possible, the investigator should inform participants about all aspects of the study - should be able to make their own decision and not feel coerced
-
Not always possible to give informed consent: Presumptive consent - asking people who are similar to the participants whether they would consider the research - assumed others would take part
Prior General consent: Asking people who volunteer to take part in research general questions - if they say don't mind, they could be chosen later
Retrospective Consent: Giving participants a full debriefing after the study and asking them to consent to their results being used now they know all aspects of the study
Deception
-
Not allowed to deliberately mislead or withhold information from participants about any aspects. Includes providing inadequate information about consent. Sometimes justified if no stress.
Standardised instructions and consent form. Deception might make participants feel embarrassed or self conscious and should be reassured that their behaviour is typical or normal
-
Confidentiality
-
Under the data protection act - any personal data to be protected. Any information collected is confidential unless otherwise agreed. Information they provide will not be able to be traced back to them
Researcher must ensure that all personal data collected is protected and sometimes not even recorded
-
Protection from harm
-
Examples: embarrassment, feelings of inadequacy, induces stress or pressure
Must make sure procedure is safe and that they will not suffer any harm from their participation in the study - ensure they have the right to withdraw so they can stop if feeling harm
If the participant thinks they are causing harm, they should stop the research
Withdrawal
-
From beginning, investigators should make it clear to any participant that they can stop their participation at any point if they feel they do not want to continue - includes results after completion
Reminded in consent form, standardised instructions and debrief. Participant under 16 - parents or guardians should be informed
