Provide children with a array of materials, for them to plan and build a home. To work in teams, problem based learning. over the course of two lessons: one to plan; one to build.
The history of homes in the UK. Create a time line of how homes were built from Stone Age to modern times. Stone Age, Roman times, Medieval Times, Tudor, pre/post WWII, Now.
Compare homes from round the world. UK/Europe, China, India, Tribal. How were they made, what do they contain.
Look at the appearance of a room and how it has changed over time. i.e. Lounge/living room. 1940's, 1960's, 1980's, 2000, now. The introduction of televisions, music system, decor, furniture. Create a diorama from a time period.
Animal habitats, how do they build their homes. Nests, dens, burrows. Build your own nest. Go for a local walk, collect items needed to build a nest. Add to some items, with materials etc. In teams build a nest.
Investigate different rock forms, determine which are natural and which are man made. Research which is the best material for building a home in Manchester. Why do you think this?
Using a selection of home types: tower block, beach hut, tent, straw hut etc. Where in the world is the best place for them to built and why. Research activity either independent or in pairs.
Choose a home from around the world, pretend you live in this home. Write a letter to a pen pal, tell them what it is like to live in our home. What challenges may there be i.e. weather. provide a selection of homes, jungle, tornado path, in a town, in the countryside.
Write a leaflet inviting others to visit a famous home. What makes this home special, why should it be visited. Provide a home to choose from: Buckingham Palace, The Taj Mahal, The Winter Palace, The White House.
Research natural disasters. The impact hey had on peoples lives. Create a table of events, the impact, and how the community recovered.
