Flowchart to Help Struggling Students
Identification
Their Ability and Aptitude
One sign of identifying struggling students is understanding what they're capable of and what they are doing in class. When students that are capable but aren't performing it could be an underlying issue that needs addressing.
Student Work
Students that are spending a lot of time trying to complete assignments, yet failing to achieve mastery of skills for the learning object of that day is a sign that there may be a larger issue at play.
Getting off track with assignments
Students that have trouble with larger assignments, because of multiply directions that are given and time management are a sign that students might need additional support
Missing Work
Students that don't produce any work during/outside of class is a sign of struggle and the identification of why there is no work being produced needs to be recognized.
Reasons Students Struggle
Execute Skills
Students have trouble managing time, planning, and organizing work when trying to complete multi-step assignments
Attention Disorder
Students have trouble staying focused and are prone to distractions, impulsiveness, and hyperactivity
Dyslexia
Students may have trouble connecting sounds to letters and processing written and oral language correctly
ESL
Students who aren't native English speakers may have trouble learning core classes, English/Maths/ Science, because of the immersion in this second/third language environment.
Learning Disability
Students may have a learning disability, such as Hearing Impairment, Emotional Distress, Autism that needs diagnosis from a medical professional.
Support
Reading Materials
Once students have been identified as struggling, looking at the reading that students are doing needs to be addressed. If students are struggling with reading, lowering the lexile number of the passages, or adding passages with visuals will help the student to process the main idea and themes used by the passages. It can also help understanding of the text.
Chunking Writing Assignments
Sometimes in writing assignments students will struggle because they don't know what to do first. By chunking the assignments, students can see the logical process in which they needs to complete the assignment. Breaking up an assignment into steps also helps students identify the task that needs to be completed and can help students create a plan of action
Creating a Plan
Focus on each step of an assignment and have students create mind maps on how they will finish the assignment is great if students are struggling to complete assignments
Intervention
Students who are struggling need to have intervention before their grades are falling below an acceptable level. It is the job of the teacher to identify any students that are struggling in their classes.
Diagnostic Assessments
IEP
Students that are struggling need to have an Individualized Education Plan to ensure that they won't fall behind their other classmates
Parent Involvement
Differentiation in Teaching and Assessing
Students that have an IEP need differentiated learning. They need either more visual or auditory resources to help their assimilate the learning objectives and skills being taught
Students also need different assessments that differ in their sensory perceptions. In my experience, using lower lexile level words, examples, and larger text help students that are having difficulty achieving success in their assessments.
Meetings
Parents and teachers should have weekly meetings to assess how students are faring with their IEP and reflect on how it should be altered to ensure that academic success ensues if there are signs that the student isn't keeping up
Specialists
Schools need Special Education instructors because each child that is struggling may potentially have a learning disability and it needs to be addressed. After learning more about special needs, I realize that it cannot be the sole responsibility of the subject teacher to handle this problem. There needs to be special instructors, school administration and parental involvement for that struggling child to be successful.
