Ancient Greek Mythology-made up stories to explain scientific facts because people were bored, and lack of technology since this happened during BC.

Xenia(hospitality)
The respect from host to guest. Giving them everything. For example, letting them stay, providing food, etc.
Thinking the guests are gods, but actually being random people who were homeless and let them in.
Did not care because the host thought that the gods were testing them. If they disobeyed the gods, they'll get punished by the gods.

This belief created a weakness amongst greeks. Contrasting the human and the divine power of gods over humanity.

Greek Gods, Goddesses
Penelope- Odysseus's wife. known for her cleverness as she plots and schemes. She is loyal to her husband while he was gone in the war. Let her hospitality take over and let many people in her castle. People took advantage of her for being queen.
Odysseus- the king of Ithaca. Known to be clever and cunning, but later leads him to trouble. Main character
Telemachus- His growth from boyhood into his own version of hero, "manhood". Figure in Greek Mythology. The son of Odysseus and Penelope. Founder of the Hero's Journal.
Athena- known for being one of the most intelligent and wise amongst the gods. She is good at strategy and giving courage. Her special powers include the ability to invent useful items and crafts, shop, chariot, plow and rake.
Zues- the first of the gods(the father of the gods). Controls lightning and thunder(sky god). Lives in Mount Olympus. Plays the role of as a major "god".
Poseidon- one of the most powerful gods as well. Rules over the ocean and all bodies of water. He could create storms, sink ships, clear weather to help. Can cause earthquakes. His role is Odysseus's mortal (antagonist). He makes Odysseus journey back for blinding his son.

Helios- The god of sun and sunlight. Ancient Greeks treated him as highly as Zeus. Reason why Odysseus lost all of his members, and destroyed the island Ogygia.
Calypso- described as "lustrous Calypso" and "nymph with lovely braids". She is smart and insightful keeping Odysseus hostage. Queen of Ogygia.
Circe- similar to Calypso immortal goddess. A mix of god and witch. Describe as lustrous and nymph of lovely braids. She cast spells to make things that can prevent Odysseus to leaving the island.
Vocab/More info
Hubris-hubris would lead to a persons downfall. Overbearing pride/ego. More of a vice(bad habit) for Ancient Greeks.
The Epic Invocation-serves as a prologue to the events to come. The poet asks for the inspiration, skill, knowledge, or the right emotion to finish a poem worthy of his subject matter.
Homer- a person who is identified as real or not. Guess of the birth is 750 BC all the way to 1200 BC. Possibility of living in Modern day Turkey. Is blind. His life remains as a mystery, but it has an impact in our world today,
The Iliad and Trojan War -- The trojan war was waged against the of Troy because Paris of Troy took Helen from her husband Menelaus(the king of Sparta). ONe of the most important vents in Greek Mythology, and has been narrated through Greek literature, mostly from Homer's, Iliad (italicized but didn't work here). Even though it is not proven to be true, there are likely seeds of truth planted in Homer's version of the story.
