Given to the UK during the Berlin conference, this means it has a wide mix of religions and ethnic groups. This led to a civil war from 1967 to 1970.

It is well known for its music, cinema and football team.
Environmental context
The north of Nigeria is in the Sahel region (a very dry dessert), much of Nigeria is made up of tropical grasslands, however the region along the coast is made up of rain-forests and is ideal for growing cocoa.
21st largest economy in the world, it has the largest population, agricultural output and GDP of all African countries.
Gained independence from the British Empire in 1960. It suffered from conflict and unrest post its independence, but is now stable.
