Jurassic Park: 4th Iteration 2nd Hour
Characters
Dennis Nedry's Death: Karma (218).
Symbolic: Killed by a dinosaur. Thought his plan was foolproof, but didn't plan for weather.
Ironic: Saddler and Dr. Harding almost followed the compys to Nedry, but decided not to (so close).
Kept in the dark about all the park's functions and build the computer system blindly.
Symbolically blinded in his death.
Ed Regis's Death
Ironic about leaving the kids when they were being attacked by the giant T-rex. Killed by the juvenile one because he ran away.
None of the other characters were killed by the giant T-rex (a much more dangerous threat).
Dr. Wu: lack of knowledge about amphibians. Even with the chart showing only amphibian DNA dinosaurs were breeding, he still didn't "get it" (234).
Malcolm
Attacked by the T-rex/mangled leg which needs surgery/bruises on torso.
Ellie Saddler must take care of Malcolm, despite him sexualizing her and undermining her because she was a woman when they first met. Lots of focus on her legs.
"Inevitably, underlying instabilities begin to appear."
Element of foreshadowing for the whole story (I told you so).
Themes
Isolation: With the jobs/functions being isolated from each other, the ignorance... (Shows how not sharing and expanding on knowledge can lead to underdevelopment in ideas and concepts).
Lack of cooperation leads to ignorance.
Dennis's limited knowledge to just the computer system. Gets lost in the park.
John Hammond: first visit to the park. "Made for children." -is it though?
Priorities:
Reactions to deaths, motivation of money, etc.
Corporate Greed
Hammond pushing to open park for entertainment instead of a research center (226).
Hammond just wants to open for the rich (222).
Message about Capitalism: Hammond eating ice cream while his grandkids are in danger (Ignoring the situation because it isn't happening to you). (222).
Hammond thinks medicine has too much regulation (can't make money), entertainment has fewer regulations.
Women's roles
Lex portrayed as a tomboy.
Ellie Saddler as a background character.
Person vs. Nature
Nature will get its revenge.
When nature is exploited for profit, ....
Symbols
Ed Regis's Leg
Muldoon's reaction--emotionless/stoic- to it compared to Gennaro-human shock/concern- who never knew Regis (247).
Connection back to hupia: dinosaurs are attacking children first (T-rex and Tim and Lex).
The park is a symbolic representation of scientific process (trial and error/guessing game/being proved wrong). -Preconceived notion of which dinosaurs are most dangerous is flipped on its head (T-rex, raptors, spitting dinosaur dipholasaurous).
Dramatic Irony
Characters are learning in different places, but we "the reader" can see it going down. (Ex. Ralph the triceratops, proof of more animals breeding, we know more than the characters do).
